Can I collect disability at work?
Can I collect disability at work? People often have a lot of questions about whether they can work while either applying for disability or receiving disability benefits. I always say it’s our God-given responsibility to work and support ourselves if we can, but if you can’t work and you can’t support yourself because of a physical or mental illness, that’s where Social Security is part of the safety net that I think we all hope and pray is available when we need it.
It’s complex whether or not you can work, so if you feel that you have some ability to work but that you can’t work full-time to support yourself, give us a call at Marasco & Nesselbush. We’ll go over your work options with you because we always want to encourage our clients to work. If you’re able to work and you’re able to work full-time, then you probably don’t need Social Security disability benefits, so it’s a win-win. But if you are only able to work a small amount and you want to try to work despite your disability, we’ll also tell you about how you can do that and about the requirements of reporting that work to Social Security.
Because if you can work and support yourself, that is your God-given responsibility. But if you’re not able to do so and you’re only able to work a little bit, we’ll explain to you how the rules of the program fit with your ability to work.
